The mission of the University of Missouri – St. Louis Dance program is to provide an environment conducive to the highest caliber of dance training and art making, which reflects the twenty-first century. UMSL|Dance promotes culturally and intellectually diverse learning environments in which scholarship and creativity can flourish. Our approach encourages fluidity between being a technician, the art making process, honing craft, and deepening intellectual explorations of movement. Our unique environment and partnerships helps to nurture exceptional dance practitioners, dance educators, dance scholars, choreographers, and will allow us to make creative and intellectual contributions to the surrounding community.

Dance majors participate in a progressive study of technical training, which is grounded in classical ballet and modern dance techniques and leads to world dance forms as well as exposure to newer dance forms. Supporting these technical studies are courses in dance composition, music, dance history, anatomy and kinesiology, costume design, and theatre production courses. Performance is integrated into the training process at all levels and students are encouraged to participate in choreography workshops, works by faculty and guest choreographers, and the many other performances presented by UMSL dance program, MADCO, and Dance St. Louis.
