Stephen Morton

Stephen Morton joined the Universty of Missouri-St. Louis music faculty in 2005 as Guest Lecturer in Voice. An accomplished bass-baritone, Mr. Morton has sung major roles in both opera and oratorio and has appeared locally with Opera Theater of St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, the American Kantorei, and the Orchestra and Chorus of St. Louis.

Following his childhood ambition, Mr. Morton began conducting in 1990 and now serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of the American Chamber Chorale. Known for creative programming, his concerts often include other artistic mediums and has made numerous guest conducting appearances including St. Louis University and Washington University. Other positions of leadership include Worship Associate and Director of Choral music at Salem United Methodist Church in Ladue. Mr. Morton also writes and hosts the weekly radio program, Behind The Music, which began airing on Classic 99 in St. Louis in 2008 and is now heard on classical stations around the U.S.

Mr. Morton received his vocal training in the Bel Canto style from renowned teacher, the late Edward Zambara at the University of Tennessee. Past coaches include Hans Hotter, Ken Griffiths, and John Wustman. Previous teaching posts include St. Louis University and the University of Tennessee.
